Dear Friends, 

It is hard to believe it but it is already time to think about renewing your CSA share for next year. While the farm shop is filled with all of the bounty of fall and we are still very busy bringing in the harvest we are also beginning to order supplies for next season. We are hiring new apprentices and renewing contracts. As we drive around from field to field we are beginning to dream of next spring. The onions could go where this nice cover crop is, maybe the corn can go over here, where are we going to put two acres of winter squash? Everything we do on the farm we can only do because of the steadfast support of our CSA share holders.

This season was a real reminder for us of how important and vital the CSA at Brookfield Farm is. This season we celebrated the farm’s 40th birthday. A remarkable achievement and one that we don’t take for granted. We had a lovely celebration on the farm full of children’s laughter, music, art, pie and stories about the farm. It was so moving to hear about the early days of Brookfield Farm, the vision of the founders and the boldness of those first shareholders and Nicki and Ian, the first managers. It is hard to imagine that when the farm was founded there were virtually no houses along Hulst Road.

We planted a tree in honor of the years past, recommitting to the vision of building community around this special corner of South Amherst. The farm has been so important to so many people over the years and it was inspiring to hear how it changed and grew under Dan and Karen’s leadership. As always Kerry and I are humbled to be here as your farmers and are grateful to be farming here. 

This season we enjoyed relatively good dry growing weather. Remember way back to spring, picking strawberries? Crops abounded with strong spring crops yielding into a summer abundance of melons, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, and corn, perhaps some record yields. We enjoyed farm events with a spring seedling sale and planting day and summer potlucks. Heavy wildfire smoke postponed  Art Behind the Barn to this past weekend, a lovely fall weekend at that. Fall harvests are pouring in to carry us to Thanksgiving and into the winter.

Of course, this season was not without it’s difficulties. Kerry’s broken leg took her out of the field for most of the summer and really put an unexpected burden on the farm. We are so grateful for the incredible community support we received during that time. Everything from help in the field, to meals brought, to work in the greenhouse and just general well wishes. It all meant so much to us. The farm feels very much like a thriving, living community, as much ours as it is yours.

We are increasing share pricing by $20 to help keep up with rising costs.  We are keeping the renewal process the same as last year and are asking that you renew your share by October 24. After that time, we will fill the rest of the shares on a first-come, first-served basis. Please do not delay; we don’t want to lose you!

We love Brookfield Farm and love the work that we get to do growing food for all of you! The CSA is the engine at the heart of the farm and none of this would be possible without you. We are so excited for next season and for another 40 years here in South Amherst and hope you will join us for another year of this bold adventure.
